My wife & I have now come to the 100th, 104th & 109th Round-Up's. The Pendleton Round-Up is unique for it's age, the arena (football field), the competitors in the arena watching and the Indian heritage. They put on a fast pace show to keep your attention. I would have preferred a better rodeo clown. The sound system was muffled making it hard. Sep 11, 2010 (The Oregonian - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- 1910: The first Round-Up opens; Roy Raley is the event's first president.
1911: A controversial saddle bronc final involving John Spain, a white cowboy, George Fletcher, an African American, and Jackson Sundown, a Native American, sparks a dispute that would last decades. The judges name Spain the official winner, but the crowd declares Fletcher the 'people's champion' after his impressive ride.

1913: The 'Happy Canyon' night show, detailing tribal history and the arrival of the first pioneers, begins.
1926: Esther Motanic becomes the first Native American to serve as Pendleton Round-Up queen.
1929: Bonnie McCarroll is fatally injured during a saddle bronc ride. She dies 11 days later, prompting a ban on female competitors. Most other rodeos in the United States follow suit.
1936: Clarence Burke of the Walla Walla tribe becomes Round-Up co-chief, succeeding his father, Poker Jim. Burke would hold the position for more than five decades.
1940: Fire destroys a wooden grandstand at the stadium less than a month before the Round-Up. A massive volunteer effort helps erect a grandstand made of steel and concrete in its place, just in time.
1942-43: The Round-Up is canceled for two years as World War II rages.
1951: The Main Street Cowboys organization is founded, forming a downtown show on Pendleton's Main Street that coincides with the Round-Up. The free show continues to this day, including dozens of vendors and several musical acts each year.
1955: A Happy Canyon royal court is formed for the first time, with Caroline Motanic serving as its sole princess for the first two years.
1969: The Pendleton Round-Up and Happy Canyon Hall of Fame opens. Among its first class of inductees are George Fletcher, Roy Raley and bucking horse War Paint.
1973: The Oregon Journal Trophy, given to the rodeo's all-around winner each year, is replaced by the East Oregonian Trophy, which remains today as the fourth incarnation of the all-around award.
1987: Clarence Burke dies, ending his 51-year tenure as Round-Up co-chief. William Burke and Jesse Jones Jr. are named to the post the next year, joining Raymond Burke as co-chiefs.
1991: Team roping makes its debut.
2000: Barrel racing makes its debut, using a route much larger than a traditional barrel racing course across the stadium's grass field.
2001: The Sept. 11 terrorist attacks shake the nation, just one day before the rodeo is scheduled to begin. The event goes on as planned, amid some controversy.
2010: The Round-Up celebrates the 100-year anniversary.
